Independence Day

One of our favorite holidays in Mexico is Independence Day (Sept. 16). We're enjoying the festivities here in San Miguel that really start on Sept. 14 and run through the 16th, with the highlight at 11:00pm on the 15th when the "Grito" is proclaimed from the balcony of the Allende house, followed by an awesome fireworks display. We'll be there tonight, along with thousands of celebrants in the Jardin. Yesterday we watched the historic horse cavalcade ("cabalgata") of hundreds of horses and riders coming in to the Jardin on a ride from Queretero. For 40 years, riders from Querétaro have retraced the route taken by Ignacio Pérez to bring the news to San Miguel de Allende that the independence conspiracy had been uncovered—a tradition that once again marked the start of this year’s commemorative events for the 216th anniversary of the beginning of Mexico’s independence. Amazing, fun, spectacular time here in San Miguel, with Mexican flags flying everywhere (including our house), and the traditional dish on Independence Day, Chiles en Nogada, being served all over town.
